Existence Is A Moment - In The Eyes Of Love ( Tribute to Joe McPhee)

Recorded by Francesco De Gallo (December 2014 in Montreal)

For the first part of this piece, I processed 3 different Joe McPhee tracks together into Midi files, then morphed them to make the melody, using a dreamy synth sound to play the piece. I also used a saxophone solo of his and some various sound recordings of mine to create a deeper atmosphere. The second part is an alto saxophone solo I recorded in a loft at the Oboro studios. I played very slowly, pushing my breath into the valve, to create a very windy effect. Once recorded, I pitched the audio down to get a lower register and added a bit of reverb on the end to space out the floating sound of the sax.

Joe McPhee is a great inspiration of mine because of how freely he played in the 70s. He incorporated feedback experiments with organ solos and would also play percussions aswell as saxophone. Some of the recordings are very raw and I connect strongly to the sound that he was able to create with such a small repertoire of instruments. Reaching deep inside the true feeling of Cosmic Free-Jazz.

Spotted Pony (Traditional)
Peeping Tomboy (Kurt Vile)

The Innocence Mission is my favorite band and have been for many years. I grew up listening to them before I knew that I liked it. My older brother and father were fans of them and I would hear their albums from the late 80’s and early 90’s played in the house quite a bit when I was about 7 or 8. Now anytime I hear their music it has the most nostalgic effect on me.

Spotted Pony is a claw hammer banjo tune I’ve always liked and happened to have a decent recording of. Kurt Vile on the other hand has become my favorite contemporary artist. I’ve never recorded a track with vocals and haven’t sang since I was a kid when my friend and I would sing Boys 2 Men songs downtown for quarters to buy pop while skateboarding. I wanted to try out the ol singing voice since Kurt’s music has been on repeat in my ears for the last two years.
